"Project delivery is very inefficient compared with our peers, we'd like a standardized approach to help improve efficiency." CIO, Global Energy Trader
Our Brief
An external benchmarking exercise had revealed that our client's project delivery was inefficient and more costly when ranked against its peers. Having developed extensive project management and software delivery best practice for our own use, we were asked to review and then manage the roll out of a new set of project management processes to help improve this clients delivery efficiency.
Our Approach
We reviewed the current documented project management processes and contrasted these with common working practices. From this, we identified that as well as a set of project management processes, greater clarity on a project's relationship with the many internal service providers was needed. Their engagement processes were not always clear and this increased project timescales and costs.
Based on our existing best practices and the client's documented processes, we created a set of tailored project management guidelines covering aspects such as project governance, writing business cases and risk management and escalation. In addition we worked with the internal service providers to help clarify and streamline their engagement processes. We published this on a project management intranet and advised on the steps and personnel needed to keep this current and relevant once the initial assignment was over.
End Result
A single intranet for project management information is now in place so staff only have one place to look for best practice. New processes are better understood and followed. The intranet has now been expanded to include software development guidance. Feedback from project managers confirms that the project management and service provider engagement advice has improved their delivery efficiency and reduced costs.
